Work Permit: Immigration, and Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sets eligibility requirements for all nationals who want to stay in Canada whether you visit, study, work, or immigrate to Canada. There are two types work permits – Open Work Permit and Employer-Specific Work Permits.
To work in Canada you must have a work permit, except for those who may not require a work permit to work in Canada as per section 186 of Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR). You MUST meet the following general requirements:
- No record of criminal conviction
- Have a medical exam, if required
- Prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family members, if any
- Not plan to work for employers who are on the ineligible list of employers who failed to comply with the conditions
- Not plan to work for an employer who conducts business in striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages
- Satisfy an officer and give the officer any documents they ask you to prove your status

- LMIA-Based work permits (Employer-specific)
- LMIA-Exempt work permits (under special circumstances)
- Bridging Open work permit
- Intra Company Transfer (ICT)
- International Experience Canada (IEC)
- International Co-op, Working Holiday
- International Mobility Program (IMP)
Study Permit: A huge number of international students enter Canada to study in Canadian institutions. All students who want to study in Canada must meet certain requirements.
As a Student, you MUST meet these following requirements:
- Be admitted into the program in educational institution
- Prove sufficient funds to pay for tuition fee and living costs for your stay in Canada
- Prove you will leave Canada when your permit expires
- Not be inadmissible to Canada
- Complete medical examination
Some students at a post-graduate level studies may be eligible for off-campus and post-graduate work permits.
